Qatar seeks to heel rift with Egypt |
EGYPT: Qatari Intelligent Service Chief Ghanem Khalifa Ghamen Al Kubaisi has launched a Qatari initiative to ease tensions between Egypt and his country, Egyptian government sources revealed on Tuesday.
Al Kubaisi communicated with Egyptian officials during the recent period to heal the rift in Egypt-Qatar relations, which began after the ouster of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on July 3, the sources added.
The source added that a senior Egyptian official received a phone call from Kubaisi 30 days ago to express the Qatari initiative. He said that the the official accepted his proposal upon two conditions: that Qatar has to stop its financial support to the Muslim Brotherhood, and that Al Jazeera Channel abide to neutrality in covering events in Egypt.
In October, Kubaisi, who was in Beirut to mediate a hostage swap between Syria and Lebanon, met with an Egyptian official to talk about the Qatari proposal for ending the diplomatic crisis. The official said Egypt could accept the proposal if the Qatari side respected the popular ouster of Mohamed Morsi on July 3, the source said.
