CAIRO: Prominent writer Mohamed Hassanein Heikal said Thursday that he believes Minister of Defense General Abdel Fatah al-Sisi will not run in the upcoming presidential elections.Heikal blamed the current crisis facing the country on an absence of alternatives. He said during an interview with the Lebanese newspaper As-Safir that non-Islamist parties have failed to present themselves as viable alternatives to Islamists since the events of June 30. He stressed that such groups lack the required popularity to compete for power.
Heikal said Egypt is also suffering from the absence of security and stability, adding, “The revolution is not a medical operation. It needs a long time to express its ideas and to achieve serious transition.”
The writer also said the new draft of the constitution is unlikely to be permanent, due to the current unrest in the country. Mohamed Hassanein Heikal said Egyptians must commit to the political roadmap in order to restore security and stability.
