Security measures intensify in Cairo ahead of Morsi trial

CAIRO: Security forces closed off a number of main squares in Cairo, including Tahrir Square and al-Nahda Square, in anticipation of any demonstrations that might break out due to the trial date of ousted President Mohamed Morsi on Monday.

Additionally, security forces barricaded the gates of Qobba Presidential Palace, as well as Itihadeya Presidential Palace, using barbed wires. They also set up bullet proof iron blockades in both locations and armed personnel were deployed inside the two palaces.

Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood called for demonstrations outside the Supreme Constitutional Court in Maadi to coincide with the trial.

Morsi is charged with the murder of protestors outside the Presidential Palace in December 2012 when demonstrations broke out against the constitutional declaration made by the former president.
