50-member committee to choose individual electoral system |
CAIRO: Sources revealed to Youm7 that the majority of the 50-member committee prefers the individual electoral system over the party list system and intends to issue a final approval accordingly. This angered some committee members, since the individual system would not include minority or Coptic representation in a substantial way in local and legislative councils, especially after the committee rejected by majority vote any minority quotas for representation.
A number of the members who reject the individual system hope to garner support from Orthodox Church Pope Tawadros II and ask the church to pressure the committee for better Coptic representation. They propose one of two options for representation in parliament: either a 50 percent list 50 percent individual or a 2/3 list 1/3 individual, the sources said.
The 50-member committee postponed discussing issues of positive discrimination until its final sessions, after finishing the constitution and other controversial articles.
